Using ArcGIS ArcMap 9.x, to select features (points, lines, orpolygons) and create a new feature class or shapefile:

- Choose the selectable layers from which to extract features. Fromthe Main menu, choose Selection. Click SetSelectable Layers, and then check the data layers you wish toselect. Click Close.
- To select the features you wish to extract, choose one of themethods below:
- From the Main menu, choose Selection, and thenSelect by Attributes. This option is useful for selectingfeatures with unique values from a large dataset (e.g., selectingstreets within a specific county from a statewide streets dataset).
- From the Main menu, choose Selection, and thenSelect by Location. This option is useful for selectingfeatures from one data layer by using another data layer.
- From the Tools menu, click the selection tool (the iconof a white pointer arrow with a cyan and white envelope to the rightof the icon). With this tool active, you can select featuresindividually or draw a box to select several features at once.Note: For more selection-related options, from theMain menu, choose Selection, and thenOptions.
- With features selected, locate the layer you wish you use in the
Table of Contents
panel. Right-click the layer and chooseSelection, and then click Create Layer from SelectedFeatures. The new layer will be displayed in theTable ofContents
panel. - Right-click the new layer and select Data, and thenExport Data. Choose a coordinate system.
- You may choose to save the output as a feature class or shapefile.To change the default, click the folder icon to browse for outputlocation. Use the drop-down menu to select File or PersonalGeodatabase Feature Class, Shapefile, or SDE FeatureClass.
- Note the location where the output will be saved and update thename. Click Save. Click OK to export the data.
- To add the exported data to the map as a layer, clickYes. The new feature class or shapefile will be added to yourmap document.

Note: You can export selected features from only onedata layer at a time. However, it is possible to combine multiplelayers of features. For more, see ESRI's overview of the Analysis toolbox.
